What the dawn phenomenon is

Towards morning the body releases more hormones such as cortisol and growth hormone. These make the liver more active and insulin action weaker – blood sugar rises, entirely without food. The basics are in Fasting blood sugar & the dawn phenomenon.

The idea: catch the rise

Movement lets the muscles take up glucose – partly independent of insulin. A light session in the morning (not hard training!) could therefore soften the hormone-driven rise, instead of letting it run.

Why deliberately light?

A very intense session could, via stress hormones, even raise the value further in the morning – the opposite effect. That’s why the dose is decisive: easy, not hard. I’ve described the difference in Exercise: down first, then up.

How I observe it

This is exactly what I’m currently testing as part of my morning routine – a protein shake plus an easy bike session – and I watch in the CGM how the late morning develops. My ongoing documentation on this is in Protein fasting & blood sugar: my self-test.

⚠️ Important with medication

Fasted exercise in the morning is trickier for people on insulin or sulfonylureas (risk of hypoglycaemia). I do this without medication – anyone taking any should discuss it with their care team first.
