Compounds and their link to blood sugar
Apple cider vinegar
The most interesting component. For acetic acid taken before carbohydrate-rich meals there are several small studies showing a blunted glucose response; the discussed mechanisms are delayed gastric emptying and inhibited carbohydrate digestion . The studies are small and short and the effects moderate – but this is one of the few home-remedy approaches with a traceable data basis.
The catch with this product: it is marketed for the morning on an empty stomach. The described effect, however, occurs mainly when vinegar is taken with or shortly before a carbohydrate-containing meal. Taken fasted, exactly the context in which it could work is missing.
Ginger
Meta-analyses on ginger and fasting glucose show mixed results with some small reductions but considerable heterogeneity .
Lemon
Flavour component; an independent blood-sugar effect at this dose is not documented .
The risk side
Acetic acid can cause discomfort in a sensitive stomach and attacks tooth enamel on frequent undiluted contact. The powder form mitigates this but does not replace rinsing with water.
The planned self-experiment
Timing comparison: intake fasted in the morning versus intake directly before a carbohydrate-rich test meal – same meal, two different days. This is exactly where it should show whether the marketing matches the research.
All of my own measurements are labelled as a single-case observation (n=1) and cannot be transferred to other people.
