The ingredients that count
Black seed and glucose metabolism
Nigella sativa is among the botanical agents with a comparatively decent study basis in the metabolic field. Several meta-analyses find reductions in fasting glucose and HbA1c in type 2 diabetes, partly in a clinically quite interesting magnitude .
Why I nevertheless stay at “plausible” and do not go to “established”: many studies come from few research regions, are small, short and differ in preparation and dosage. Transferability to a commercially available oil capsule preparation with a standardised dose is not automatically given.
Thymoquinone as the key
The discussed main active compound is thymoquinone. Its content varies considerably depending on origin and processing – cold-pressed oil from a defined origin is a quality plus here. Many preparations, however, do not declare the thymoquinone content.
Points to consider
Can enhance the effect of blood-sugar-lowering and blood-pressure-lowering medication – clarify medically with corresponding medication. Not recommended in pregnancy.
Test idea
One of the few candidates where a CGM test makes methodological sense: four weeks, focus on fasting values, standardised test meals.
All of my own measurements are labelled as a single-case observation (n=1) and cannot be transferred to other people.
