What matters for blood sugar
Ashwagandha and stress
For ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) there are several randomised studies on stress, cortisol and sleep quality with partly positive results. The studies are mostly small, short and methodologically heterogeneous .
The blood-sugar link – and why it is indirect
A direct blood-sugar-lowering effect is not documented . What is interesting to me is the indirect route: stress raises insulin resistance via cortisol, and poor sleep measurably worsens glucose tolerance . A preparation that actually improves stress or sleep could theoretically also favourably influence glucose regulation.
This chain of reasoning is plausible but not shown for the specific product . This is exactly where I separate an interesting hypothesis from proof.
In my own CGM documentation I regularly see that stress-intensive night call-outs raise my glucose level even without food intake . Whether an adaptogen changes anything about that would be an exciting but methodologically demanding test.
HCR note
Botanicals such as ashwagandha are subject to “on hold” claims in the EU: no health claims may be made for them. Anyone who is nevertheless presented with suggested effects in marketing should keep this in mind.
Safety notes
Not during pregnancy and breastfeeding. With thyroid and autoimmune disease, clarify medically, as effects on thyroid hormones have been described. Interactions with sedatives and immunosuppressants are possible. There are individual case reports of liver damage.
My test approach
Methodologically difficult: stress is the confounder I actually want to measure. Possible approach: CGM night courses on call-out-free nights over several weeks, clearly declared as an uncontrolled n=1 observation.
All of my own measurements are labelled as a single-case observation (n=1) and cannot be transferred to other people.
